When someone is retiring, advice from others who have retired already can be a helpful addition while planning your retirement. We have asked a few fellow retireeís to give us advice they have for future retireeís.

Here are their answers:

1. Retire with these words in your mind: This is only the beginning, you are starting a whole new chapter in your life and this is the time to do things that make you happy. You are now out to do things for yourself, not anyone else. So get out there and enjoy this stage.

2. You canít just retire with nothing to do. You need a hobby or something of interest that will keep you motivated and busy. No one can go through life without a purpose. You are no exception. Once youíre retired, what is going to be your purpose in life?

3. Donít count on pensions to pull you through. As much as we all like to think that our pensions will let us live a care free retirement, this isnít always the case. Most pensions are quite a significant reduction from the amount of money you have been living on for the past number of years. Yes your financial obligations may be somewhat different, but now you may want to travel or work your hobby. Either way, make sure before you retire that you are financially secure by going a budget and comparing it with your pension. That is the best way to find out whether you will need to top up your pension.

4. Donít waste a day of your retirement doing something that you are not happy doing. This is your time to fully enjoy everything about you life. You donít have to make sacrifices anymore and you donít have to follow anyone else's schedule but your own. So live each day to the fullest and enjoy it!

5. Don't forget to stay in touch with friends.  Having somewhere to go everyday keeps us socially connected.  But when we aren't on any schedule and you aren't seeing everyone all the time, time can get away from us.  Don't forget to make time for those you care about.  But this is also a good time to weed out those who you do not like to be around or who are negative.  Only keep positive influences around you, as you have no time for people who make you unhappy.

6. Spend as much time with your family. This will give you a chance to re-connect with your family.  You will have the time to really get to know the people they've come to be.  This also gives them time to spend with you.  God knows that when we are in the working world, there is never enough time for our family.  This is your chance to make up for lost time.

We hope that you have found these hints helpful. Retirement is something the majority of us look forward to most of our lives, but when it gets here our wishes for how we plan to spend this time may need a reality check. That doesnít mean we wonít be able to do what we want, it just means we may need to take it easy and slow things down.
